ØKERN COMMUNITY BANNER

What does it mean to own a place? or live on a place that is owned by someone else? or live on a place whose future is decided by someone else? Or is it decided by the inhabitant of the space? Or together? What does that mean, together? Who lives here in Økern?  and what sense of belonging do they have  to Økern, if any?

ØKERN COMMUNITY BANNER ART PROJECT
‘Økern community banner’ is an art project that aims to discuss and visualise what it means to live and work in Økern - an area that has been marked for development by the local government.

The idea is to collaborate with different groups around and within Økern, over a period of time, to share experiences about ownership to a place. This will be done through a series of banners, created by these groups, to voice these perspectives.

Each banner will be displayed over a period of time in central Økern: at the end of each period, the banner will be dismantled to make way for the next banner, and the process repeats itself.

WORKSHOPS
These banners will be done through a series of workshops through which we can discuss and explore the ideas behind the project.

Each participant will contribute to draw, paint or print on their own little flag. Each of these will be sewn together into one big banner, which will be displayed on the field next to the old Økern Center.

The colours used in the painting of the flags will be made using plants harvested from the Økern area (Reinfann taken from the field next to the old Økern Center), which is a meaningful way of connecting the landscape of Økern, together with the stories shared in the workshops.

Participants will be invited to the raising of their respective group banner.

At the end of the display period, the banner will be divided up into the individual flags and returned to the participants, to make way for the raising of the next banner, made by another group of Økern.
FUTURE THOUGHTS
The project has the potential to be scaled in the form of more workshops, community gatherings, festivals, etc.. if it is rotational.

-The raising of the flag could become a ritual involving the different people of Økern, around food and drink?

-Or each group might want to make a flag instead of a banner, and if so, what does that mean? How does it affect the result ?
What discussions comes out of this?

- this could also allow for new groups and communities establishing themselves in and around Økern in the future, to participate and become part of a larger community, maybe other senses of belonging could be created?
