PRODUCTION SPRING 1-Concepts

RESEARCH QUESTIONS & JUST OWN QUESTIONS
- what is tree-time?
- how can we experience tree-time in order to think more long-term? how far can we go to ‘live’ in tree-time?
- isn’t any human experience of tree-time still a human one? it’s impossible to be completely in the more-than-human experience.
- How is craft a way to remind us of long-term thinking?
- why do we need long-term thinking?
- how can we tap in to this ancient knowledge while also acknowledging that life today is intrynsically from ‘then’ (and that’s not necessarily a bad thing)?
- How can we humans explore new perspectives of time with the help of trees as a conduit for time?
- How can we learn to think long-term again, to build sustainable futures together with more-than-humans?
- How is craft linked to our surroundings? What can we learn about our surroundings from doing craft?
- When does a tree become wood, the material for making the craft?
- How can craft help us build long-term sustainable futures together?
- which senses do I use when I sit with a tree: eyes, singing, ears, touch of bark. sight and sound and touch.
- interesting guardian article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/23/mother-trees-and-socialist-forests-is-the-wood-wide-web-a-fantasy what do I think of this? the article looks at our (human) way of humanizing trees in order to relate to them. how can we look and relate to trees without humanizing them (look at how they ‘feel’ the same way we humans ‘feel’ for example).
- on connecting generations: Imagine one of your descendants two generations into the future. What would they think of you, their ancestor ? How has your way of life shaped who they are? What sort of anecdotes would they remember about you? How will you be remembered as an ancestor?

MAP OF CONCEPTS TO EXPLORE :
SEEDS - seed storing, saving seeds, planting tree seeds? seed workshop in collab with permaculture society? (see artist reference)

TREES - to connect people, animals, insects, plants, mushrooms. part of a forest, urban forest ? link to time, what have the trees seen of time passing?

REBIRTH - link of the past rebirthed to the future (see notes on the good ancestor) through seeds and human/more-than-human inhabitants.

STORYTELLING - telling the story of the trees of the areaa, stories of what they have seen, stories of their properties, their uses to humans and more-than-human. link to the story of how people think they will be remembered in the future.

TIME - link from past ancestors (through the stories of the trees) to future ancestors, seeds maturing to fully grown trees takes time, long-term thinking

LEGACY - what kind of ancestors will the participants (humans) be in the future?

MORE-THAN-HUMAN
PERSPECTIVES - trees perspectives (and all their more-than-human neighbours?)

CONNECTION - connection between human and more-than-human, between past and present and future, between past ancestors and future ancestors.
