COMMUNICATION- workshops - Helena Elias

Assignement- reflection on workshops- art and context- see link to final assignement here
This assignment aims to deepen your understanding of the role of context in shaping public perception of art. Drawing inspiration from Workshop 3, led by Dr. Helena Elias, students are expected to critically demonstrate critical thinking about the workshop's impact on their artistic practice.

This assignment encourages participants to engage in practical artistic activities and reflect critically on the concepts discussed during the workshop. Begin by reflecting on Dr. Helena Elias's introductory talk about the importance of materiality in artistic production. Explore the significance of material choices in shaping the narrative of art.

The reflection should be 500 words or less. You can include images and illustrations.

summary of notes related to the assignement
-a multi-sensorial approach to the choice of materials in her practice.
- Clay methods that inform the drawing methods and vice-versa (build up of testing one after the other)

-  several ‘practiced’ environments
- The constant questioning of materiality and her methods to get there (even though kind of very abstract after a while) was how she got through to other forms of knowledge linked to what she was researching (form one culture to the next, different forms of knowledge related to the same thing she was researching)
- When working with clay and drawing, she also takes into account the sensoryness of the material she uses, touch, smell, vision, even taste BUT ALSO INTUITION (gut feeling, visceral level)

-choice of material in shaping the narrative of art is significant but depends:
does the artist want it to be significant? what narrative? what art?
- for her whether to use clay or drawing was suited to the narrative she chose to explore in her different practices.
- Pliny the elder story opned up how clay and drawing are connected and was one narrative.
- the old fragments of clay picked up in the streets of lison is another narrative, and another direction in her practice.
- also uses intuition to choose clay or drawing
- this is very related to Losæter, and is helping me to explore my own senses, and relying on intuition.
-only if the artist wants it to be significant. There is a lot of intuition that can go into this choice, but being logical about it can also be beneficial.
-exploring the significance of material choices in shaping the narrative of art is very much based on what one is researching, working on
- approach to  my main takeaway was the different notion of time within our workspace and outside it.
-albeit more and more abstract, were also a way to access other forms of knowledge in relation to what she was researching
